Today was a travel day. We needed to get from Imari in the northwest of Kyushu down to the Aso region in the middle of the island.
Central Hotel Imari has been a fine example of a business hotel, essentially western in style but with Japanese touches, like the eclectic breakfast and a public onsen (bath) next door. Here’s my (big) breakfast this morning, fairly typical. Sure beats the usual “free breakfast” at an American hotel.

Salad, salmon, eggplant stir fry, some kind of seaweed veggie salad, eggs, furikake and pickles on rice. Small cup of coffee.
I’m not sure how much the ceramics industry still drives Imari, but we did enjoy how the town decorated otherwise ordinary streets with some impressive jars. We passed by this one on the way to replenish our supply of kumquats.

If we drove straight to Aso it would take around 3-4 hours, so we broke the trip up into a couple of parts. First stop: pick up a cheap suitcase at Don Quijote (“Donki”) in Saga. My plan is to send the pottery ahead to our last hotel via Ta-Q-Bin, and that way I’ll be back down to one piece of luggage.
Donki has the contents of a store like Target but the aural and visual vibe of a Las Vegas slot machine floor on full tilt. If I was an experienced do-it-for-the-content blogger I would have kept my cool and taken some photos or video inside Donki, but in reality I was immediately overwhelmed by noise and lights, and it was all I could do do keep it together and find the luggage section in the maze. Success! Cheap hard side carry-on was found, mission accomplished.
Next we drove across flat farmland from Saga into central Yanagawa, where we went on a kind of Japanese version of a Venetian gondola ride. Yanagawa is criss-crossed with a grid of quiet waterways. They loaded an assortment of us tourists into a narrow boat and our captain punted us through the canals.

Most of our captain’s patter was in Japanese, but he did know how to point out “Big White Building” a couple of times. He did sing for us, kind of in a sea shanty style, which sounded especially great when passing under a bridge.
Yanagawa isn’t the most picturesque city but some sections had character, and cherry blossoms can really spruce up a place.
When we looked for a lunch spot we noticed there were a lot of unagi (fresh water eel) restaurants. It turns out another name for the city is “Unagi no Yanagawa” due to all those tasty eels in the canals. We were floating over lunch. We chose a place a few blocks from the boat landing. How could we resist this happy eel logo?

After some grilled eel I picked out a place on Google Maps which said it was an art museum, but in fact turned out to be more of a community art center. We walked in and had an awkward broken Japanese/broken English interaction before the gaijin realized there’s no art on display. Oops.
It was a very modern looking building next to the Shinkansen line and a large park. It all looked recently built. It’s mostly farmland and sparse houses around this station, kind of a strange setting for so much new infrastructure.

The Shinkansen is on an elevated track, even across flat farmland, to the horizon in both directions. I assume it makes sense in a country where land is precious, and it also gets rid of grade crossings.
The park was still “in process” with new plantings. There was a Samurai statue with one hand clenched and one hand open, signifying a balance between strength and control on one side and wisdom and openness on the other.

There was also a field of tea plants, where they hold classes on gathering tea starting next month, and a pottery kiln, studio and stage. Seems like exactly the amenities Michele and I would want in a park: tea, pottery and a place to perform Taiko.

After our legs were stretched we headed for the mountains. The highway climbed into the hills and then plunged into a 4 km long tunnel. We emerged into a wide circular fertile plain about 20 km around, surrounded by a mountain wall. The Aso caldera formed 90,000 years ago when a huge eruption spilled lava over Kyushu, then collapsed to form the caldera. As any geologist knows, 90,000 years is a blink. Aso is one of the largest calderas in the world (Yellowstone is the largest?), but it’s just a baby age wise. Judging by the pacing of past eruptions it’s also probably due for another island changing event.
To our right, in the middle of the fertile caldera, Aso-san rose, the new active volcano. Steam floated up from one of the peaks. To our left was the spa town of Uchinomaki, which is where our ryokan (traditional hotel) was.
Sozankyo is a more Japanese style hotel. You take off shoes and put on slippers at the entrance. It’s customary to change into a yukata once you’re there for the evening. A daily hot spring bath in the onsen is part of the ritual.
Our room looks out onto a garden. The doorways are a little low but my extra tall yukata fits!

We even have our own little private onsen. The water is slightly milky from the minerals.
